How to Apply to College

Applying to college requires research and planning. Choose a program, complete an application, and submit the required documents. Many colleges accept applications through the Common App or their own portals.

Types of College Admissions Explained

When applying to college, schools generally fall into one of two admission categories:

1. Open Admission

  • Accepts most applicants with a high school diploma or GED.
  • No GPA or test score requirements.
  • Common at community colleges and some online universities.

Examples of Open Admission Schools:

2. Selective Admission

  • Requires specific GPA, test scores, essays, or other qualifications.
  • May have competitive acceptance rates.
  • Used by most four-year colleges and universities.

    • Minimum SAT: 1080 | Typical Range: 1310–1450
    • Minimum ACT: 21 | Typical Range: 29–33

    • Minimum SAT: 920 | Typical Range: 1020–1250
    • Minimum ACT: 17 | Typical Range: 22–26
  • Georgia College & State University
    • Minimum SAT: 1030 | Typical Range: 1198–1290
    • Minimum ACT: 20 | Typical Range: 25–29
